About the Instruction Levels
In Level 1 (Beginner), we'll begin with tuning the guitar, proper body position, playing in time and reading tablature (musical notation that uses symbols or letters instead of notes on a staff). Working with melodies that include bluegrass and blues standards, you'll learn chords and how to switch from one chord to another smoothly and quickly. You will also learn ways to make the most of practice time at home. The last few lessons will include a half-hour lab in a studio equipped with a bass amp, guitar amp and drums. Students switch off on different instruments (such as guitar, percussion and bass) to get a feel for the elements of a band and an appreciation of the skills required of each member.
In Level 2, we will focus on developing parts and arrangements, playing in a group and working on complimentary parts as an ensemble. At this level, you will improve your chord vocabulary and rhythm guitar skills, as well as your knowledge of chord progressions. We'll also explore critical listening, improvisation and a variety of musical styles. All Level 2 classes include a half-hour of lab time in the studio.
The Group Learning Experience
Group lessons at Northfield Music provide aspiring musicians with a comfortable, supportive environment for learning and applying practical skills. Student groups are small (with two to four students in each group) to allow for individua lized attention while providing the advantages of a group learning experience. These advantages include:
· The ability to learn by observing others. This allows students to get a different perspective on what they are learning and process information more quickly and easily.
· Positive peer pressure. Students in a group tend to motivate each other and often progress more quickly than those in individual lessons.
· Experience playing in front of others. Lessons require students to play music in front of others on a regular basis, which helps reduce the fear of playing in public.
· The opportunity to record and listen. Listening to themselves play is an eye-opening experience for students. Northfield's professional recording studio gives students this key advantage.
· Ensemble playing. Playing in an ensemble is a great equalizer, allowing beginners to try out other instruments and giving more advanced students a new perspective on their abilities.
· Fun! Students have a great time and look forward to their lessons.
